What is your successability quotient?

Qoutient refers to how many times one number can be divided into a larger number. For example, 100 divided by 20= 5. Five is the quotient. Let's substitue one number and call it the success factor. Lets arbitrarily say it's 1001. If we then list all the techniques or T-factors we have at our disposal to facilitate success, we can arrive at a successabilty quotient. The more techniques, the higher your quotient, and the higher potential for success.

I read a book many years ago.. 1001 ways to be more successful. (Not to be confused with 1001 ways to make money, a listing of careers.) The author states that none of these techniques by themselves, nor even a few of them will bring the great success you seek, but that the more of these techniques you use, the greater and more facilitated will your success be.

What this meant to me was that success in many ways is a combination of factors and techniques. Could becoming successful really be this simple? A formula? Yes and no. Yes if enough of these techniques are implemented with a feasible product or service and plan, carried out with dedication and perseverance. Tips like keeping a mirror on your desk to see yourself with a friendly happy face, if you spend a lot of time on the phone, will certainly improve your chances for success in that arena. But even 10 or 100 such tips won't bring you the success you seek, if the 10 or 100 methods aren't powerful factors, directly beneficial to your prospects needs or interests.
 

Being cheerful and helpful doesn't make the sale, they enhance the chances for its success. What makes the sale is if the benefits the customer wants are being realized. And especially extra benefits or information which your customer never thought of. Consider the term "added value". We'll talk about that later. So the question you need to ask yourself, is; Is what I'm offering my prospect fulfilling his needs and desires? Is what I am offering encompassing benefits above and beyond just those of immediate interest? And how can I tweak to perfection my offer so that it is irresistible. 

 This led me to ask; - are my products, my services and my marketing ploys just a bunch of complimentary  techniques and am I missing the important factors of what my prospect seeks. And even before that, are the benefits I offer being offered to the right prospects. The simple answer is, there is no simple answer. But that doesn't mean there aren't success formulas.

Because there are so many factors and variables to success, with the need to master the cogent ones, in the right sequences, most every success is a trail of trial and error. Failing your way to success, is not just a pun, or a play on words. Dedication and perseverance always bring success. Most often with an unfailing vision and ability to modify and adapt to unforseen or unknown forks in the road.

Except for imagination most everything can be formulized. Even as I understand, fuzzy logic.

The bottom line is that you need to learn all you can, so that your succesability quotient becomes an ever greater number to  the ultimate success factor. Start with that which you deeply desire to accomplish or that is within your area of expertise. Because with such a beginning, your trek to the top will always be rewarding. That is in and of itself success. Just as I write articles for those whom wish to begin a business or enhance their business knowledge is rewarding for me. It allows me to discover my creativity while I share my knowledge and success techniques.

Finding those whom have similar desires and can benefit from your experience and interest already gives you a head start. Next creating a plan, using all the knowledge, help and genius you can muster. Then implementing your plan with dedication and perseverance. Each and every ounce of these ingredients will determine your sucessability factor.


Creating a business plan.

There are two visions when writing a business plan. First is for your own use, a guideline to clarify your path to your goal. The second plan is to attract investors or partners.This business plan will need be quite encompassing. Determine the product or service which interests you deeply and/or of which you have a good deal of experience, (Aka your niche). What is the greatest impact (benefit) you can make with your product/service upon your greatest potential market. Your plan will include who needs your product, the market potential and ....

Proposing the offer. Benefits, price, shipping, extras. ( This is the hard part)

Finding the best, direct avenue to your prospects. Getting your offer to your prospect (This is the harder part)

Making the sale/ getting a response (This is a hard part)

Following up (This is the easy part)

The above is so oversimplified I should be remiss if I didn't say there are thousands of books on how to create a business plan. And they are quite daunting. I need not write another one; suffice to say library's and the web are full of such information. Keep in mind if it was easy, everyone would be rich. Your success will depend upon your unwavering dedication to accomplish your dream.

When George Washington crossed the Delaware his victory was the result of dedication and surprise. It was a freezing cold night and the British never expected that Washington's army, many without shoes, would or could,  brave the icy conditions. These are the kinds of inspiring stories you'll remember when the going gets tough.


 Secrets to working harder!

Sounds nutsy.. right? How can there be secrets to working hard. Working hard is working hard. What possible secret could such a message reveal. You're right. The secret is to work smarter. Now everyone has heard the phrase work smarter, not harder. But the fact is that working smarter requires working harder. How is that you ask?


Working harder does not necessarily mean more labor intensive. Working harder means spending more time working smarter. Researching your market and every phase of your venture. To start with...

  • Become an expert, an authority, for your product or service.

  •  
    1. Search every website relevant to your product or service.

    2. Read every related book, trade magazine, newsletter and publication.

    3. Visit every trade show you possibly can.

    4. Network with everyone you come across, in your field.

    5. Blogs, forums, tweets et al.

    6. Leave no stone unturned in your search for related products and potential prospects.

    7. * Work your way up the ladder to a position of control (A prime source for your product.)

    8. Create a confortable monthly budget to invest in all the above learning methods, which you cannot acquire freely.

    Here's an example from my own success in the perfume business. After selling from the trunk of my car for some years, I opened a small retail outlet, selling closeout fragrance and cosmetics. Mainly to the many flea markets that operate in the Miami, Florida area. I learned that every six months cosmetic makers changed colors, or just the names of colors, to stay current with trends. I also learned that most of the merchants did not want to bother with cosmetics, because of the issue of colors and especially heat. That left me to deal these items with little or no competition. Selling or buying. I was able to buy $5.00 lipsticks for 25 cents, more or less. I would resell these to discount stores or cosmetic stores which were not able to get these brands. A few flea market merchants would handle powder products, eye shadow, etc., but not lipstick. But one did. He put them in an ice chest!

  • One day, one of my mentors revealed to me that in the field of limited distribution designer fragrances, (which at that time were very hard to acquire, due to their strictly direct only to department store sales policy), there was always someone less able to buy quantity than I. This meant if I was able to buy a designer fragrance at say a 35% discount, there were still smaller retail outlets that would buy at 25%, as was I, at that time.

    He introduced me to a source where I could buy the same items at 35% and resell all the excess at 25%, to other stores not in my area. If for example I needed 12 for my store inventory, I would buy 50 to get the better discount. Thus my own inventory would cost me that much less and I was making money on selling off the surplus I couldn't use. Soon I expanded on that formula, buying even larger quantities.

  • Duplicating this pattern I was soon buying in the hundreds and then thousands, where such opportunity and quantity presented. Incredibly, from nothing, the first year I did over 300,000, the second 1.2 million and the third year over 5 million in sales.

    Times and conditions have changed, but the patterns and methods above have not. Manufacturers have a variety of sales pricing for various levels of customers. Both by quanitiy and by market. Starting at retail, then wholesale distribution and even lower for exporters, specialty sales, like the army's PX, duty free, and even pricing for prison stores. So as you can see, within the field of your interest there are many opportunities, aside from just the item and the prospect. In fact, as I was in the fragrance industry during the time it was transitioning from select outlets (called doors) to more public avalability, such as drug stores and ladies specialty shops, I was instrumental in putting fragrance products into outlets, which had not previously handled them. Did I make mistakes? Tons. But one good idea can erase a myriad of mistakes.

  • And one bad idea, or one back-stabber can ruin a perfectly great business. Enter Robin Leach. His name should have been a clue. Another story for another time. Stay tuned.
